February 21, 2010

Well, it's been a long 10 days since Jeffrey entered Rehab. He didn't make a very good transition, adjusting, but seems to finally be fitting in. I was talking to him last night, and he honestly doesn't really remember anything or anyone ...visiting prior to the last few days. Unfortunately, other than us constantly pumping him up about his visit with Dwayne Harris, he doesn't really remember that either. (so Dwayne, we'll take a repeat visit anytime....lol....) He is getting stronger and stronger everyday. He's going to occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy. He even play's WII against an old man! He said the nurse gave him a handicap, because he was so good at it, and made him do it with his left hand, and be a "girl".....I don't really know if he used his left hand to do it, but probably so, since he's in rehab..he's moving his leg more and more now. Arm is still a little sore. I don't know if I get this right, but this week, they did xrays i guess on his arm, and up at the shoulder part, because he hasn't been using it, it has become weak, and the muscle starts coming away from the bone, and he has to build that back up.??? Mama was his babysitter during the week last week, as I had to go back to work, so i don't know if i got that right.

Friday, his doctor wanted to give him a shot of BOTOX!!! Yes, ladies, he got that stuff that we "dream about"....but he got it in his calf on his left leg. The reason for this is described below.

Botulinum toxin injection therapy (also known as "BOTOX® therapy") is used to treat dystonia—a neuromuscular disorder that produces involuntary muscle contractions, or spasm—that affects muscles that control movement in the eyes, neck, face, limbs, voice box, or the smooth muscle in the bladder.moreThe goal of the therapy is to reduce muscle spasm and pain.

Since he had a right side brain injury, his left side IS affected by it some. Well, when he bears down on his foot, on the floor, he has a "tremor" in it....it shakes.....making him unsteady, if he WAS trying to walk...As of right now, he still can't put weight on that leg anyway because of the break...but....if he was it could be dangerous in his stability. He has JOKED all weekend to everyone that comes in that he had plastic surgery on his knee Friday...and got a boob job on his knee....

He is ready for that "stupid" C collar to come off. I personally don't see where it is doing him any good...It surely isn't holding his head still from moving...I think it is too big...They did do xray's on that last week, and found that there were no cracks or fractures..but we are waiting on word from the dr. to give permission to take it off. That will be a GLORIOUS day for us, as that is one of the main "aggrivations" for him. It rubs him "raw" literally.

He transitioned to eating real food slowly...but to be honest....the food up there is "kinda bland"....He is usually not a picky eater, at all, but this food isn't seasoned with anything. So we have been doing alot of catering from home and restraunts. I don't care, as long as he will eat it. Friday mama took up "magic noodles" for him. This is ramen noodles...they alway's worked their magic when him or Jonathon had upset stomachs...and they worked their magic once again. That was the first day he actually ate anything of substance...and he ate about half the pack...Well, that afternoon, he wanted Andy's....so his request was a shrimp burger....and he ate ALL the shrimp! By that night he was requesting homemade spaghetti...So saturday, I stayed home and fixed it, and we enjoyed it with Sharon, Hayleigh, Kristen, Brad and Lauren Longley (school friend) even came and got some, she works in Childrens Rehab. And what was left his nurses ate! He said maybe he could earn some brownie points....He has got his sense of humor back, and some, in my opinion...

I have told him if he works REALLY hard this week, and I can get some training on lifting....We will ATTEMPT to bring him to church next Sunday. We will just have to see how that goes...He does stay in a wheel chair most of the day, so that would be the easy part...it's the moving part that would be the hardest..but he is getting stronger and stronger everyday, and he helps, somewhat, when he get's up to go to the bathroom....

Oh, and one more thing, to end the status...Last Friday afternoon, the day after he got in rehab...he got into this thing where he wanted me to call Ricky Crawford (truck repairman)...well, I didnt...knowing the truck was totaled....but Jonathon gave him HIS phone..and the next thing I know someone is on the other end, talking..I snatched the phone from Jeffrey, and hung it up....Someone immediately called back, and I told him I was sorry, he dialed the wrong number, he was trying to get up with Ricky...WELL...it was the weekend guy answering from Home.....SO....even in all of that Jeffrey remembered Ricky's number....I told him I was sorry...and explained for him to tell Ricky that he has been an important person to Jeffrey that day....and told him about Jeffrey's wreck...Jeffrey got Flowers this Friday....From Ricky....Well, when he told me about them...he said...Oh, I got flowers from that guy you gave a million dollars to......I said WHO??? He said Ricky.....(Since Ricky repaired the truck twice this year, prior to the wreck)...that being said...Jeffrey has told everyone this weekend that those flowers costed us twenty thousand dollars.....there's that sense of humor!!!

Well, that's all for now. I will update later during the week. It's tough to do them, and work, and visit him. But I'll try to do something at least once a week.
